Small Swimming Pools

Almost everyone loves swimming pools, it is the best place to be on a hot summer day.Small swimming pools are best suited for children who love splashing and adults love swimming in bigger pools.

Small swimming pools are often built in the backyard of the house as a landscaping element and they are small also because it costs quite a bit of money to build and maintain the pool.

Swimming pools are fantastic to use for exercise because it burns fat and is a great sport as well.If you are looking to build a small swimming pool for your backyard, here are some useful tips.

Here are the basics of a swimming pool.

  • 1.Basin
  • 2.The motor pump
  • 3.The water filter
  • 4.The chemical feeder
  • 5.Drains
  • 6.Returns
  • 7.The PVC plastic plumbing that connects everything together

A proper swimming pool will have all the components as mentioned above. The water needs to circulate from the water filter which cleans the water using the chemical feeder and chlorine which keeps the water free of bacteria.Sometimes the water has to circulate through a heater in order to keep the right temperature.

When building a pool, you need to lay the drain system in the lower end of the swimming pool with the surface slanting towards it, this way the water can easily flow through the drains.Make sure to cover the drains with grates so swimmers will not have their swimsuits or hair caught up in them. You can catch any debris by attaching a strainer at the mouth of the drains.

A proper swimming pool needs also a powerful motor pump that helps the water flow to and from the swimming pool through the filter and chemical feeder.I recommend using high rate sand filters because they clean and debris from the water by sand.

Another filter you can use it the cartridge filter, also known as diatomaceous earth filter. It cleans very fine debris particles from the water.

In small swimming pools the water circulates more often than in a large swimming pool.Ideally, the water should circulate every thirty minutes or so.Remember to connect the filter and pump to a fresh water line.

For chemical cleaning agents I recommend using sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite.Attach the automated chlorine feeder to the filters to ensure a good chemical filtration.

To keep the Ph levels between 7.8 and 7.9 you need to use sodium carbinate and sodium bicarbinate as required. When the water is filtered, it should go right back into the swimming pool.

If you get algae in the swimming pool you need to use chemical treatment, scrubbing, skimming, washing and filtering of the water.

There is no point in building a pool unless you use the best possible drains, pumps and filters. The same goes for the pumps room where all the pumps and filters are installed. This is where the quality of the water is maintained.

Where to dig a small swimming pool? The backyard is the best option because a pool is also a nice landscaping element. You must also think about other things like when you dig the pool.

Most people would say that summer is the best time to dig it, but you should really dig a pool in the winter when the ground is hard and not soggy as it can be in the summer. You need the ground to be hard because you will use heavy equipment to dig it, it will not be dug by hand.

When digging, make sure the sides of the hollow are sloping or else the sides will cave in, 1 foot vertical drop for every 3 horizontal feet is the ideal ratio. To keep the pool in right shape you might need to use steel enforcements.

Children are often unpredictable, so you need to take this fact in to consideration by building a fence around the pool or building a swimming pool cover.

If you build your small swimming pool in the backyard and there is a cold winter, drain the pool and then put antifreeze in the key areas to prevent the remaining water from freezing and breaking anything. Then put the cover on the pool.

Swimming pool covers

Small swimming pools come in many shapes and sizes, at least when you build one your self. There are different swimming pool covers you can buy, like a solar cover that keeps the water warm and also warms the water with the help of the sun.

There are also special safety pool covers that does nothing more than keeps the pool safe and prevents accidents like from your dog falling in or little children falling into the pool by accident.

There are different swimming pool covers for above ground and in ground pools that keep debris, dirt and animals out of your pool during winter. The cover also prevents any growth inside your pool that the cold winter can cause.

When looking for a suitable cover for your small swimming pool there are some things you should look for.

  • 1.Get a cover that is strong. The cover needs to be so strong that it can prevent any humans or animals from falling into the pool, not just protect the pool from dirt and debris.
  • 2.Different states and areas have different laws regarding what pool covers you can use. Check with the local authorities to ensure your cover meets all the requirements for your area.
  • 3.Make sure your swimming pool cover comes with a manufacturer´s warranty that is at least 2 years. The warranty should cover all defects and longer for a limited warranty. The cover should also come with a enough parts so you can anchor it properly.
  • 4.The pool cover must also have a good overlap length, just buy a size that is larger than your pool.

Local department stores and swimming pool supply stores sell quality swimming pool covers. Before installing the cover, make sure you read the instructions. This is something many people forget to do.

If you want a strong cover, get a hard top cover. You can literally step onto these and you won't fall into the pool.

Small swimming pools are great if you are looking for a way to cool off. Also, if you have a small backyard they are the perfect. Above ground pools are also an option if you are looking for a less expensive or even a temporary solution. Great hub!

Hello Tommen,

It's always fantastic to get cool in swimming pool during the hot summer. Small swimming pool costs very affordable price and can be owned by anyone, who have little backyard. However ,now a days there are some type of swimming pools, which are ready to use within 24 hour and don't need too much maintenance. I am talking about above ground swimming pools. It is very affordable and convenient.
