Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Energy
74Even though it was once disregarded as a prominent solution for power, Nuclear Energy is once again becoming one of the more favorable options as a safer alternative.
Many believe this is solely down to the lower amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted by Nuclear power when compared to the many power plants in our planet or the old school method of burning coal.
People often do not read about the benefits nuclear power has and jump on board with the negative publicity it often receives. In this article we are going to look at the pros and cons of nuclear energy.
Pros of Nuclear Energy:
-
Nuclear energy is greener that most of the other alternative power sources. This is due to the lower carbon dioxide emissions caused through the use of nuclear power. This helps to keep our planets atmosphere healthier.
-
It is one of the largest power generating technologies available. It has the ability to create enough power to cover an extremely large capacity such as entire geographical locations. This is something which less effective technologies such as solar power cannot compete with and only work on a local scale.
-
One of the greatest things about introducing nuclear power as a main source of energy is that there is nothing new to learn. Nuclear power has been around for some time and there are already people who specialize in the technology. This means there is already enough knowledge to start using it straight away.
-
It has relatively low operating costs especially when put against some of the other technologies available for use.
Cons of Nuclear Energy
-
One of the reasons most people worry about the major introduction of Nuclear Power is if that here are a very high-risks in case of a failure or accident. Furthermore as Nuclear Power has not been used as a main source of energy over a prolonged period of time there is a high chance there are risks that we don’t even know about.
-
The construction of the systems including radiation containment systems costs a huge amount and also takes a long time. This means it could take a while to get every where running of nuclear power and away from the other sources.
-
It is not a form of renewable energy, one of the most common reasons people do not want to switch to the nuclear alternative is because they believe more time and investment should go into finding a reliable renewable energy source for the future.
-
It is quite hard to source the uranium required without running into other troubles. Most uranium sources are protected by local tribes or communities who do not allow it to be mined. It is also very expensive to mine it if permission is granted.
-
There has been a lot of negative publicity with regards to the health of miners and workers due to environmental contamination through the process of getting the uranium. On top of this there are reports stating the waste will be very long term and last for up to 500 thousands years.
-
The value behind it opens the market up to terrorism and piracy. Nuclear power stores could be the perfect target for terrorists and if the uranium or waste were to be shipped abroad it will be open to pirates and terrorism.

My father works for the NRC(Nuclear Regulatory Commission), and I have personally visited a nuclear power plant in Bay City, TX. The public criticizes Nuclear Power without considering the benefits and jobs it provides. For example, in Bay City, TX thousands of jobs have been created because of the nearby power plant. However, environmentalist groups from Austin continually protest the plants construction at public meetings. Overall, I believe that nuclear power is a very important energy source for our nation that should continue to grow.
