Pompholyx Eczema

Pompholyx is a type of skin disease, which is characterized by the presence of small blisters on the feet and hands. One out of five thousand people in America are affected by this chronic disease.

The characterization of this recurrent and acute dermatosis of the fingers and soles is the sudden onset of plenty of deep-seated vesicles which will later on be converted into fissures and scales and will finally result in lichenification.

‘Pompholyx’ is also known by many other names such as Dyshidrosis, Acute vesiculobullous hand eczema, Cheiropompholyx, Dyshidrotic eczema and Podopompholyx. Some of the factors that aggrevate the condition of this disease are allergens, seasonal changes and emotional stress.

The main symptoms of this Pompholyx are the appearance of very minute blisters on the tips of the toes, palms and fingers. These blisters may at times cause some pain or itches and will become worsen when any sort of soap or water are being used. These opaque blisters will be seated very deeply and they cannot be broken very easily.

A sort of fluid called ‘serum’ will be ejected out when the scratching blisters are broken and this serum has got the capacity to create some painful cracks on the skin. Finally, the skin will become very hard and dry with some scales appearing on it. The nails that are present on the toes and fingers will have a pitted appearance.

As far as the treatment is considered, the patient has to cut the nails as short as possible and should clean it from all sides by using the baking soda. A paste should be made by mixing water with the Baking soda and it should be applied on the affected area twice a day and should be repeated for three days.

Approximately after five minutes after applying the paste, the hands should be washed properly and should be made dry without any moisture. The blisters should not be scratched, as this will result in spreading of the rashes.

Another treatment for this pompholyx is the use of Topical steroids. Though it is a medicine, it is not advisable to use this, because this will cause many side effects such as thinning of skin due to the presence of large amount of bacteria and toxins in it, and this will gradually affect the hand when coming in contact with the skin.

The individual with pompholyx has to take in food with good and balanced nutrition, because it is also caused due to nutritional deficiency. Another method of treatment is to soak the hand or the affected area in a dilute solution of potassium permanganate which will make the vesicles to dry out and hence the staphylococcus aureus will be killed away. Anyway, this is also a very painful treatment.

A few of the other recommended treatments are white vinegar soaking, Zinc oxide treatment, Nickel-free diets and Alcohol-free, caffeine-free diet. when the dermataphyte is candida albicans in the gastrointestinal tract then the Sugar-free, gluten-free and the fruit-free diet is preferable. The light treatment is also highly recommendable in treating this disease wherein the UVA-1, PUVA, Grenz rays and the low-level light theraphy, done by combining the Red and NIR(LED) are used to cure the disease.
